Coming Soon: A Week of Service

Go Big or Go Home!

We've decided to do a week of service towards the end of the summer.
The goal is to get the whole ward involved, and to do a variety of projects throughout the community.  We also really want everyone to give and get a lot out of the various projects. The little things, when done en masse, will make a huge difference!

The tentative dates are the last week in August - we are still in the early planning stages, but if you have any ideas, suggestions, or requests for organizations/ projects/ etc., please let me/ us know.

Humanitarian Efforts Review

Mormon Messages: Bishop Burton - Humanitarian Efforts Review

This is an inspiring and heart warming address from Bishop Burton about the wonderful impact our service is making.

"As ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40) and "Remember in all things the poor and the needy" (D&C 52:40)

Thank you for your daily acts of service.

Soup Kitchen Update

Following the initial inquiry as to the days and times that work best for you all to serve a meal at the Soup Kitchen at St. Vincent De Paul, we have arranged 4 dates when we can serve.

Friday, April 17 - Dinner
Thursday, April 23 - Dinner
Tuesday, May 12 - Lunch
Tuesday, May 19 - Lunch

We can send 7-12 people to each opportunity. Volunteers must be 10 or older. We need to confirm the number of people that will be attending, so please comment on the blog, or mark the list that will be going around Relief Society and Young Women.

Thanks! I think this is going to be so rewarding!

Spring Hygiene Kits a Success

Thank you to everyone who helped make this project a success.

Thank you especially to the Torre Pines High School National Honor Society, and the Young Women and Relief Society of the Del Mar Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Thank you to the countess, anonymous donors who gave loads of hygiene supplies to the foster students of San Pasqual Academy. Thank you to the women who gave of their time to pack the kits. We had tables full of (awesome) hygeine supplies (I would love to be on the receiving end of this :)), and had to make two trips to San Pasqual Academy to deliver all of the Spring hygiene bags.

Terry Summerhayes delivered the hygiene bags to the teachers at San Pasqual Academy, and the sight of so much generosity brought tears to their eyes. What a blessing it is to participate in the service of our fellow beings!

Here are some pcitures of the packing!

Sherrie, Lindsey, Kim decorating and stuffing bags.

Elizabeth, Margaret, Jill loading bags.

Christine, Jill and Melissa help out.

Elizabeth, Ashley, and friend tie ribbons on the bags.
(*Sorry, I am still learning the Young Women's names - let me know who you/ they are and I will make the changes on the by-lines.)

Let's Serve Soup

Here is a great service opportunity - perfect for those of us who only have a couple hours at a time.
St. Vincent De Paul, the organization that hosts a Soup Kitchen in San Diego, would love for us to serve with them. We could serve Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner, any day of the week. So, lets pick a date, and a time that works for us. We can have anywhere from 1-12 people at a time.

Breakfast: 6 am – 9 am
Lunch: 10:30 am – 1 pm
Dinner: 4 pm – 7 pm

Since we are focusing on the hygiene kits right now, let's think about a Saturday in April that works for us.

We're Off to a Smashing Start

After a fantastic first meeting , we decided to follow a format that promotes one service project every three months. (Quality over Quantity) Also, we will email/ publish a list of organizations with whom we can offer our services for a one-time project. Then, each person will pick a group from that list with whom she'd like to plan a one-time project, pick a month, and rally the troops. While this month's project is already underway, we will give plenty of notice as projects approach.

This month (ie. now), we are gathering hygiene products for San Pasqual Academy, the first residential education campus designed specifically for foster teens. We are partnering with the National Honor Society of Torrey Pines High School, and will finish with 150 bags of hygiene products (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, tooth paste, tooth brush, loofas, etc.) - items that most of us take for granted, but are not automatic for the students of San Pasqual Academy. Please bring the items you'd like to donate to the Del Mar Ward Building by March 22. We will gather to put the items in gift bags on March 31st. (Note: The student body at San Pasqual Academy is 35% caucasian, consider buying shampoo and conditioner, etc. for diverse hair types.)

Thank you in advance! Remember: Service cures a sad heart.

Ready, Set, Serve!

SAN DIEGO - Many of us have the desire to serve others, to make a difference. We could make the time to help others; however, finding that opportunity is something that never seems to get checked off on our "To Do" list. So, Serve One Another, San Diego seeks to leap that initial hurdel for you.

Whether you are a stay-at-home mom who has a few hours during the day, or a working professional who has time at night and on the weekends, or an empty-nester whose flexibility we all covet, this site will provide a plethoroa of opportunities for all circumstances.

If you have wishes or desires to serve a particular group of people, or in a particular way, this site will investigate and inform you of those opportunities. We invite you to join us in serving others.

The surest way to happiness is through service!
